frida

Other than being obsessed with height, size and weight, this modeling industry is constantly on the look-out for the next Sasha Pivovarova, and we may have found that in a certain Lindsey Wixson. Fresh, edgy, unique, these are some of the words we have often used to describe someone who we think will make it big in the industry. No doubt, these faces will leave a huge impact on the editors and designers but more often than so, we are sometimes unable to grasp the beauty of it, and whatever "unique" becomes "peculiar." And in situations like these, there's Frida Gustavsson, one of the prettiest face on the runway. She is almost elf-like in her looks but definitely not so when it comes to her height (those legs!!!). Ignore Freja or Ginta (or at least for a while), this Swede stunner made her debut in Paris, opening the Valentino Fall '09 Couture show. Talk about having a big break, for Frida it was huge. Since then, she has appeared on the cover of Vogue Germany, editorials in Vogue Italia featuring the very same Valentino Haute Couture, and has continued her success for Spring 2010, booking over 60 shows in her debut season. Fall saw her walking in 69 shows, opening 4 and closing 4 shows. That's pretty good for a 16 year old, and from an industry that has recently received much flak for putting teenagers in their mother's dresses, I couldn't even care less. She's a stunner, no doubt about that.

the answer is blowing in the wind.

L'OFFICIEL has just released a commemorative issue containing a thousand images of Alexander McQueen's very first work at Givenchy, and through his years at his own namesake label. It is definitely a piece of history worth collecting.

10 facts about alber elbaz

1. Alber was born in Morocco, raised in Israel and graduated from the Tel Aviv School of Fashion and Textiles before moving to New York in 1985, where he learnt his trade under American Couturier Geoffrey Beene.

2. Alber Elbaz first fell in love with fashion at around the age of four or five. He says "Sometimes the rush makes me not like it that much, because I want to have time to dream and time to think."

3. Mr Yves Saint Laurent appointed him heir apparent of YSL Rive Gauche, before Gucci Group bought over the house. Elbaz then joined Krizia as head designer before joining the house of Lanvin.

4. Alber Elbaz oversees every detail of the Lanvin empire, from the shop windows to the shoe boxes that come secured in a black bow.

5. Alber believes that his mother is his biggest fan and critic, but more often a critic. His favourite quote from her was that of "Alber, I wish you to be big and small. Be big in your job but remain small and modest in person."

6. Alber believes that his obsession with bow ties has partly got to do with them taking some attention away from his face.

7. Alber leads a very simple and basic personal life. He does not do much outside of work because he has very little time (he comes home at 10). But this, he believes, allows the mix of reality and fantasy in his designs.

8. He buys fabric for next season straight after his show.

9. But he all wants to do after shows is to lie in bed with PJ's on, eating soup and reading trashy magazines, watching movies and sleeping, just sleeping.

10. Alber thinks that relaxing is a dangerous time for him. "Fashion is all about working on adrenaline, and the moment you stop, everything stops with you." he says.

the gentlewoman

So everyone here knows that I didn't get the Miu Miu collar, the one single thing I could own from Spring and I blew it. It was actually sold out, but yeah... Well, the only consolation for the day was that I kinda needed some other retail therapy for the failed one and so me being impulsive and seeing how magazines are often (actually always) so so good, I had decided to get a few magazines. And I have a confession to make, I blew the money for the collar on magazines, and you know how even collars from Miu Miu do not come cheap, so you get it...

One of them was the first issue of The Gentlewoman. The female counterpart publication to FantasticMan (arguably the best man magazine ever, at least to me), is not exactly the high-fashion, glamourous, glossy (well, the material used for the cover is kinda matte-rough, which is ten times much better than gloss), nor is it a fash-fash magazine but like FantasticMan, it presents individuals as they are, not heavily styled but strong characters who speak volumes. Not surprisingly, for the first issue of The Gentlewoman, Phoebe Philo who presented a minimalist collection for Celine, was the cover girl (now I sound like Tyra Banks and ANTM) for the simple, beige little book. See the link? Beige-Nude, Phoebe's colour of choice for Spring, Minimalist-Simple, Celine Spring 2010 and The Gentlewoman.

The different women in the book, Louise Gray, Alice Rawsthorn, Daisy Lowe, 'Princess' Julia. The Gentlewoman focuses less on fashion, but more on the mundane lifestyle of fashion and art figures, and interviews them about making lists, food, transport, ice cream. It's definitely a nice break from all the fashion-related articles.

And there's this really nice editorial that photographs two friends, one tall and one short, in shorts.

If you haven't notice this by now, the concept of simplicity extends throughout the whole magazine from the layout of the articles, to the editorials and to the styling. Power Sessions, modeled by Eniko Mihalik, photographed by Alasdair McLellan, and styled by Jonathan Kaye. Gyming in a bra and knickers, you know that's gonna be the new it-thang.

And the star article of the whole magazine is most definitely on Phoebe Philo, the cover feature. Written by editor in-chief of The Gentlewoman and portraits photographed by David Sims, the article delves into Phoebe's return to fashion and her work in Celine.

Other than being styled in Celine and Phoebe's own wardrobe (Duh!), The Gentlewoman does the unthinkable in this photo. You see on the right, that's not a naked Phoebe Philo. That's a nude leather shirt Phoebe's wearing from the Celine Spring Collection. Ingenious, no?

What I really appreciate in the magazine is the lesser use of models in the editorials but the focus on artists both in fashion and in art. The one seen above features Catherina van Eetvelde, photographed by Willy Vanderperre, styled by Olivier Rizzo. And I would like to make the statement that the Prada coat never looked this good.

The Wardrobe Section focuses on the details of the clothes, something that you would hardly get to see unless you go to the store and something that you would hardly even see in the details column at style.com. But the thing is that because I forgot to turn on macro mode (and i'm too lazy to retake it) so you are not able to see them clearly on these photos and that defeats the purpose so....sorry. The tiny details, the materials of each piece is a beauty on its own and because I own this editorial and I have seen what Miu Miu and Celine and Prada looks up close, and that my life is officially complete.

ARGH, MIU MIU. UP CLOSE.

So good....obviously not this photo because it's blurry and stuff, but in magazine-life, it's so good.

The thing about FantasticMan is that they have these amazing articles on the smallest, sometimes insignificant details to some such as the bowtie, and likewise for The Gentlewoman, knots have become the main focus for this issue. It's funny how The Gentlewoman (and The Fantastic Man) are able to explore these tiny details that no one ever seems to notice.

P.S. I believe that many seem to have the misconception that fashion magazines are for women, especially this magazine is called "The Gentlewoman" but I believe that there comes a point in life where I do not read magazines to gain information about fashion, I get it from everyday life, my interest and twitter and blogs, and magazines just make fashion fun and insightful. From a new perspective. If you do think magazines are for women, then I'm thinking that you are only exposed to ones that tell you what to buy for this season, what are the latest trends, blah blah blah. Those are obviously catered to woman whose dressing is dictated by a mag.

hey look here.

This is not meant to be an official post, but it will serve as a reminder for me that this is the best editorial ever, if I ever forget that such an amazing editorial exists. This is for mere documentation purposes and if you have seen this before, you can skip this or you could now be angry that Miu Miu and McQueen got wet or you could be jealous that Alla Kostromicheva looks perfect in here or you could agree with me that Sølve Sundsbø is the best photographer ever. The truth is I'm actually fearful that such editorials will never happen again. So if 20 years down the road, if I happen to be a stylist or a fashion editor or an art history teacher, and if nothing really interests me anymore, I can go back to this site of mine and be awed again.

on paper they are the most beautiful people.

So you and I know that we will never be in a most beautiful people list, but I'm glad that we could still be in the running for Paper's list. As said on its website, the amazing folks that Paper has brought in are a bunch of purposefully diverse, eclectic and slightly off-kilter people. You know what this means, I'm sayin' that Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie and George Clooney wouldn't even be considered for this. I'm just sayin'....maybe I could stand a chance. You know, just sayin'...

(Ok, stop it. You and I won't stand a chance, especially when the coolest people are in it.)

1. autumn de wilde & shirley kurata

Autumn and Shirley have probably spent weekends with Elijah Wood at Kate and Laura Mulleavy's house watching horror movies, know every book in their colour-coded bookshelf, and probably, just probably have gossiped about how Alexander, Jack and Lazaro are having secret affairs with fashion editors when they stay in the same apartment during New York Fashion Week. Jokin'. The stylist-photographer pair has been with Rodarte from the beginning, organising the house's first runway show in 2005, dressing up the models, and you know the rest of the story, where Barneys and Bergdorf came along, and Anna Wintour and Tavi came sitting front row.

2. hanne gaby odiele

The only similarity Hanne Gaby has with other models is her 'founding story': a 17-year-old Hanne Gaby Odiele was minding her own business at a music festival in her native Kortrijk, Belgium, when she was approached by a man asking if she was interested in being a model. A golden opportunity or a classic pick-up line? “I didn’t really trust it,” she remembers and adds with a smile, “but now I’m here.” Other than that, Hanne Gaby is like no other. Hanne Gaby, like I mean Hanne Gaby Odiele, she should be in this list like forever. To me, Hanne Gaby has the best streetstyle among all the models; she does not do the same model off-duty look: t-shirt, jeans and biker jacket, that probably ten other models are doing.....you see. She's my favourite model now, she's mah gurl.

You tell me, who wears Dries head to toe and have Miu Miu collars.

MORE MIU COLLARS.

And plays air guitar with other model band mates backstage.

3. ohne titelDesigners Flora Gill (she's the one sitting down, who prefers bright hues and arts and craft) and Alexa Adams (she's the one with the dark-clad, city-girl persona) named their ready-to-wear label Ohne Titel, or “untitled” in German, as an homage to Anselm Kiefer, the German artist who inspired their first collection and often leaves his work… you guessed it. The designer pair met in their second year at Parsons and their story is much more interesting: “I actually saw Flora’s work before I ever met her,” says Adams. “Everyone put their work up on the wall. I remember seeing Flora’s and thinking, ‘Oh, that’s really good.” Adds Gill, “Ours were exact opposites.” But it was the perfect contradicting formula that has made them recognisable among the sea of wearable yet sometimes repetitive collections in New York. Their clash of ideas and concepts often produces a cool mish-mash of avant garde and traditional handiwork, which has no doubt won over many editors, including Carine Roitfeld.

4. natalie joosARGH, MIU MIU AND DIET COKE. Natalie Joos is so so cool, probably the most stylish casting director, Tommy Ton thinks so too. She is responsible for picking the right faces for ad campaigns and shows, and has made famous Jacquelyn Jablonski and Lisanne de Jong. Having modeled and earned a journalism degree before she became a successful casting director and setting up her own casting agency, she admits that her journalism skills do not help her as a casting director but Joos still does occasionally write for magazines. "I do write good emails too," She adds.
